INTERVIEW: DARREN ARONOFSKY CAN HANDLE WRESTLING *AND* BALLET

On Tuesday afternoon I interviewed the director Darren Aronofsky for the second time — the first was two years ago, and we focused on a wide variety of topics pertaining to his career; this time we focused nearly exclusively on his new film “Black Swan” (Fox Searchlight, 12/1, trailer), which had its North American premiere on Monday evening at Roy Thomson Hall as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. (It’s been a great week at TIFF for the whole Aronofsky family — Darren’s film was greeted with a rousing standing ovation, while his wife, Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, received significant praise of her own for her performance in “The Whistleblower.”)

Anyway, as you can see/hear by checking out the videos below, Darren and I discussed his decision to cast Natalie Portman as a world-class ballet dancer; the numerous parallels between “The Wrestler” and “Black Swan”; the value of employing a moving camera; the high number of special effects shots in the film; earlier films about the personal and professional lives of dancers; and much, much more.
